Brookings Entrepreneur Name: Shelleen Weeks
I create handmade jewelry designs from recycled materials, including vintage silverware, copper electrical wire, copper plumbing pipe, coins, game pieces, and broken china dishes. My mission is to bring joy to people by creating affordable jewelry that can be worn every day. Items appropriate for dress up or jeans. Something you don’t have to wait for the perfect occasion to wear. And if we recycled along the way, well that’s pretty darn cool, too!
I enjoy the look of mixed metals, where the tones of silver, copper and gold are combined. This look is so warm and inviting, it just mesmerizes me. I have had the privilege of having 2 articles published featuring my original mixed metal designs! My rustic knife handle birdhouse pendants were published in the summer 2015 issue of Jewelry Affaire magazine, and my mixed metal spoon owl necklaces were published in the spring 2016 issue of Belle Armoire Jewelry magazine. Such an exciting accomplishment!
Why did you participate in the BEDC sponsored Pop-up Market?
I chose to do the Pop-up Market, as it was an excellent opportunity to hand out business cards and make people aware that I am a local business. I do 95% of my sales in Sioux Falls, but I live in Brookings! There just are not a lot of opportunities to sell in Brookings, so I thought it was fantastic to be able to participate in the Pop-upMarket. I would love to see more of these events!
How did the BEDC Sponsored Pop-up Market impact your business?
I was able to hand out business cards and make a few sales to local buyers, so that is always a plus in my book!
